Curriculum Committee Minutes
Proposals, Discussion, and Actions
Meeting of March 2, 2007
Cornish Hall, Room D218
11:00 a.m.
Present: Pamela Summers, Emilie Kudela, Marley Barduhn, Joseph Rayle
Minutes: The minutes from the November 3, 2006 and January 19, 2007 were accepted.
Pam explained that she offered to meet with Mark Connell but he refused. She sent an extensive memo to him regarding CAP 260. To date, she has not received this proposal back.
CAP 404 Again, the question was asked whether or not we have anyone to teach this course. Pam received the approved proposal back from Professional Studies. The School Curriculum Committee recommended this proposal for approval and Roy Olsson concurred. Since, we have also received the approved proposal from the School of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee as well as from Mark Prus. Even though this has been approved through the other two schools, it still must go through all three schools in order to go forward.
Marley informed the committee that approval for the new curriculum format will be effective this fall. People will be submitting more topical outlines rather than syllabi. This new information should be coming out soon.
With regard to the syllabus for this course, there is no due date listed for Project 1. Project 2 has a due date but no beginning date. Marley pointed out that week 14 indicates that the final project is assigned and it is due week 15. This covers Project 2.
Item number 8 asks about sufficient resources. Was this addressed from the last time? Pam spoke with Mark about this with regard to CAP 260, but not 404. He has not responded with respect to CAP 404.
Emilie questioned the course topics and the list of objectives compared with what the students are doing. Do they match? There are six sets of programming challenges, which are confusing. There are two projects, which are addressed.
Grading The paragraph about grading talks about grades being curved. We need to refer Mark to the College Handbook. There is a statement from 1980 on grade inflation on page 63. Marley pointed out that Computer Applications is not a department and they have no chair. Who do they report to? She suggests that Mark revise the statement. The committee believes that it is ill advised to tell students about curving grades in the syllabus.
The issue with the course attendance policy from our last meeting was never addressed.
Action: On hold.
Will this be a problem given the fact that Professional Studies and Arts and Sciences have passed this proposal? Should it go back to them since we are making/suggesting changes? They will receive a copy of what we have done.
Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for March 16 at 11:00 am in Cornish D218.
